Ok kids! I had some good feedback on last week’s blog so since you like lists; here are two more. This week we’ll look at my top 5 horror sequels and top 5 most violent horror movies.

LITTLE MISS HORROR NERD’S TOP FIVE HORROR SEQUELS

 (MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!)

5. Friday the 13th The Final Chapter

fridaythe13thpart4_3Up until recently Parts 6 & 7 were my favorite sequels in this franchise. After viewing all of the films from a different perspective for the podcast, I switched my favorite to The Final Chapter. This film has what many of the later sequels do not —  continuity. Aside from this, it has a strong storyline, characters you care about, decent kills and an 11-year-old hero! What more can you ask for? It’s not perfect but it is pretty damn good for the fourth movie in a franchise. And it has boobs — which makes the boys (Ed Note: And some girls) happy!

4. Scream 4

Scream is probably my favorite horror franchise next to Halloween. I like all three Scream sequels. There are no weak movies in this series (Ed Note: Did you see Scream 3?). In this film, we get the lovely Emma Roberts playing Sidney’s cousin and the main killer. She does murderous bitch very well (Ed Note: Debatable). I also enjoyed the twisty false beginning to the film. Because this franchise took an eleven year break this installment felt almost like a fresh update on the original Scream. It had a great cast, plenty of murder and made me laugh a lot. I may be an idiot but I never guessed who the killer was either.

3. A Nightmare On Elm Street : Dream Warriors

dreamwarriorsMy favorite sequel in this franchise used to be Freddy’s Revenge. Upon further evaluation, I switched to this film. For some reason as a kid, I didn’t realize how much the second film veered away from the formula of this franchise. Freddy isn’t supposed to inhabit the bodies of teen boys just as Jason isn’t suppose to possess someone who eats his heart. Dream Warriors is strong entry into this series. We get Nancy back as well as a new batch of Elm Street Kids. Although Nancy is murdered, we have a new worthy heroine who falls into her place. With any horror movie, we need creative kills. We get that in spades in this film. My personal favorite was Jennifer getting her head bashed through a TV that had arms and Freddy’s head.

2. Curse of Chuck

I’m sure some of you will think I have lost my marbles (Ed Note: Yep) but of the five sequels in the franchise, this is my favorite. I did enjoy Bride of Chucky and laughed quite a bit things got way off track with Seed of Chucky, so I was looking forward to this film. I was not disappointed.  Curse of Chucky moves away from campy and back to creepy. I am a HUGE Brad Dourif fan so I loved that his daughter played the lead girl. Aside from that, there were some cool kills and I loved the creepy house setting.

1. Halloween H2O

h20-2

I love this movie and I think this is the strongest sequel in the franchise. Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her role as Laurie Strode was basically the guarantee that the film would be successful.  Aside from Jamie Lee Curtis the film had a strong cast, an excellent setting in the school, and a super creepy opening with the nurse from the original Halloween being stalked and murdered by Michael.

LITTLE MISS HORROR NERD’S TOP FIVE VIOLENT HORROR MOVIES

5. Hostel

It took me a long time to work up the nerve to see this craziness. I actually saw the sequel first. If I ever had plans to take a trip to a far away land and stay in a youth hostel, I cancelled them after seeing this horror show. I think the most cringeworthy scene is when the killer Dutch businessman offers to let Josh go after drilling holes in him. Unfortunately for Josh, he isn’t really free to go and the Dutch guy cuts his Achilles Tendons as he tries to get away. Then there is the Japanese girl whose eye is blow torched and although she gets away, she ends up jumping in front of a train. Trips to Slovakia? Thanks but no thanks!

tcm4. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Here is another brutal and terrifying film I avoided watching until my thirties. I was convinced I would not be able to make through the film due to being frightened to death. I eventually did and I was just beside myself. I had never seen a film like this. It was raw and riveting. Just the idea that one could be riding around with friends, make the wrong stop and end up being butchered like animals was my worst nightmare. People aren’t murdered during the day! Are they? Even though this movie is basically bloodless the images of the teens being tortured and murdered inside the house never leave you.

3. Halloween 2 (2009)

I know many of you out there hated this film. You cannot deny the fact that it is uber violent. This film is just dark and disturbing — like a REALLY scary nightmare or bad acid trip. The death of the nurse just makes you feel like you have witnessed an actual murder. The death of Annie was so depressing it made me want to go watch a Brady Bunch Marathon (Ed Note:  Uh….it’s the Brady Bunch that you watch to talk you off the ledge? Really?)  right after the movie.

2. I Spit On Your Grave (remake)

This film was just as brutal as the original,  albeit in a different way. In the original, the focus was on the crimes against the woman. In the remake, the focus is on the revenge she takes against her attackers.  Shotgun fired up the ass anyone? Castration with a blunt knife? How about having all your teeth pulled out with pliers? Did I tell you I hate the dentist?! As far as brutality and violence goes in movies, this movie is totally over the top. I’d skip eating before watching.

1. I Spit On Your Grave

spit4

I just watched this movie for the first time this year although it is almost as old as I am (Ed Note: They made movies back then?). I had avoided it for years as I feared I would be psychologiclly scarred by it. I wasn’t but I did feel like I needed a shower after the movie was over. This woman was repeatedly raped, beaten, and sodomized. Honestly, it felt like you were watching an actual rape at times.  It didn’t have that glossy look many horror films have now. The film had a Texas Chainsaw Massacre feel to it. It works. Neither of these movies had much of a budget and both depicted murder and rape occurring in broad daylight. If that is not scary, I don’t know what is.

So that is it! Those are my picks. Feel free to add to my lists or debate them in the comments.
