Mad Monster Party is a 1967 animated film produced by Rankin/Bass for Embassy Pictures. Although less well-known than Rankin/Bass’ holiday specials, it has become a KILLER cult film and one of my faves.

1

The film was created using Rankin/Bass’ usual Animagic” stop motion animation process. Starring Boris Karloff as Baron Boris von Frankenstein and Phyllis Diller as the Monster’s Mate. This is one Rankin Bass Special NOT TO BE MISSED!

While you’re watching my fave film…They just released these amazing masks! WEAR EM AND WATCH! Now you can become THE COUNT, THE BARON, LITTLE TIBIA or THE CREATURE and even FANG! Just slip one of these bad boys over your head and watch out for the transformation! These latex masks are painfully exact and sculpted from many screen captures from the movies characters to create these painstaking 78 likenesses!

Little Miss Horror Nerd’s Little Horror Blog 67

ghost

I don’t know much about Bigfoot, (Ed Note: He beats up people who screw with him and then eats dried meat)  but I  have never been a believer. I also had never seen a film about Bigfoot up until yesterday. I chose Exists because I wanted to try something new and I am a fan of Director Eduardo Sanchez. His most famous film would be The Blair Witch Project. I actually liked two later films of his, Lovely Molly and Altered much more.

2014-11-12-13-41-04-970608679

Exists opens up with a group of five friends heading to a family member’s cabin in the woods for the weekend. On the way, they hit something with their car.  They find no body of an animal or person — just a little blood. After assuming it’s a deer, they get back on the road. They eventually arrive at the cabin and it’s a filthy mess looking as if no one has used it for years.

Later that night, something or someone comes for them and it’s pissed. I came to a realization about halfway through this movie: Exists is The Blair Witch Project with a Bigfoot instead of a witch. It’s set in the woods with a cast of kids that are stuck out there trying to escape something they have not seen but know is there. In fact there is a lot that goes unseen. I was disappointed in this movie overall. There are deaths, but they are all virtually bloodless. That would have been fine if the atmosphere had been creepier and there had been more suspense. But there wasn’t. In a way it was much like an episode of Scooby Doo in that it was a bunch of kids running from a monster. Though no one ever died in a Scooby Doo episode, that show was very suspenseful compared with this drivel.images-10

There was no horror,  comedy, gore or even tits! It was a hollow mess. I only hung on too see Bigfoot and get my $6.99’s worth. Yes, you do get to see Bigfoot and there is a twist but even those disappoint. Wait til it is on Netflix.

Puppet Titties.

That’s what you’re going to remember most from The Monster Puppet Massacre.  Unless, of course, puppet titties are part of your daily routine.  If that’s the case, more power to you.  Please don’t move across the street from me.

download

The Monster Puppet Massacre is not just a clever name, but it tells the entire story of the 2010 Straight to DVD horror movie. There is a a monster puppet and he goes on a massacre.  Pretty simple stuff, really.

Dustin Mills’ creation uses as many gimmicks as possible mixed with a decent horror story and many horror stereotypes and cliches. And fart jokes.  Lots and lots of fart jokes.

images (2)The story revolves around Charlie Hawkins and a group of teenagers who have been tempted by a prize of one million dollars should they stay overnight in the creepy Wagner Mansion.  Sounds a lot like House on Haunted Hill, right? One character even points this out.  The problem for these teens is the fact that the master of the house, Wolfgang Wagner, has created a giant monster in order to exact revenge on the teenagers for closure on a backstory that comes out over the course of the movie.

Included in the group is Charlie’s love interest the overly sweet Gwen, an English limey punk rock bastard, his busty punk rock girlfriend (holder of said puppet titties) and Raimi Campbell (nudge, nudge) a horror expert who happens to be a virgin and lives in his mother’s basement.   All that’s missing is the dumb jock for a complete 80s slasher type of lineup.

images (1)Outside of the novelty of a movie that is entirely cast by puppets, the strength of this film lies in it’s computer generated, beautiful and genuinely creepy backdrops.  The story involved here is simple and honestly, when a movie is banking on your love of puppets and horror to attract you, it’s best to keep things simple.  That’s not to say it’s not an entertaining story because it is well executed with extra points for a humorous and fulfilling backstory.

Does that make up for poor voice acting, uneven sound quality, kill scenes that amount to the puppet monster running into other puppets and thus making them dead and mostly lackluster dialogue?  And fart jokes — old man fart jokes, main character fart joke and even rabbit fart jokes.  Probably not, though your mileage may vary depending on your likes and dislikes in your horror movie.

download (1)The Monster Puppet Massacre is what the title says.  Nothing more, nothing less.  If you’re looking for a “diamond in the rough” horror film, keep mining those roughs.  If you are looking for a strange, unique take meshing the horror genre with a genre not usually associated with it, it’s worth a look.  The moments of competent storytelling are numerous enough to keep you interested throughout.  It’s interesting enough to stoke the interest to check out the less gimmicky but equally as low budget Dustin Mills followups, Night of the Tentacles and Bath Salt Zombies.

On a tempered scale just for low budget B-movies, The Monster Puppet Massacre rates 4/10.  Not quite as hardcore as Peter Jackson’s Meet the Feebles, but not as nonsensical either.

featuring the Hasbro Oil Paint By Number kits

WOW! Did I love paint by numbers! I always loved the look and I loved painting them! My parents loved these kits too because they kept me super busy and after I painted them they became artwork for my walls, so they had less posters to buy! LOL!

My fave sets were these MONSTER ones! The artwork on the box covers were SUPER amazing and the fact that they were monsters fit right into my monster sensibility and into my monster clutches!
