Episode 141: Wishmaster 3 – Beyond the Gates of Hell

Wishmaster_3If you are expecting to see Hell or some battle that takes place at the Gates of Hell due to the misleading subtitle of the movie, you will be disappointed.   What you will not be disappointed in is this podcast’s coverage of the movie.  Join Ron and Little Miss Horror Nerd as they welcome The Girl Who Loves Horror, Michele Eggen, to take a look at the penultimate movie in the Wishmaster franchise.  Laugh with them as they ponder over burnt bodies left unattended in the hallways of higher institutions of learning.  Cry with them as they point out all the continuity errors from movie to movie.  Love with them as they happily accept the first glimpses of naked people in the franchise.  Finally, learn with them as a hypothesis pops up about the plot of the film that has not been discussed (to our knowledge) before.  In short, they will talk way more about this movie than anyone else ever has.  Also Sean Connery’s son! Legit!

MY FAIR FREDDY

In honor of our recently posting several of our classic Nightmare On Elm Street episodes, I will honor Freddy with 5 of my favorite kills from this franchise. Slasher films have been my favorite sub genre of horror since I saw my first one. Most kills in slasher films can be repetitive and bland.  Freddy is an entertainer and delivers creative and memorable kills. Below are my favorite kills in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.

1. A Nightmare On Elm Street  – I recall being quite frightened the first time I saw this film. I was in high school at the time and had never seen any horror movie like it. I think Tina’s death is probably the best of the entire franchise. It’s repeated on the babysitter in New Nightmare but lacked impact because it was a repeat and not executed as well. I was in shock as Tina was slashed in bed by an invisible killer and then dragged around the room and across the ceiling. Of course Rod could not help her, he couldn’t see the assailant either.

2.  A Nightmare On Elm Street  –  My second death also comes from the first film and is the death of Glen. Although in a way Glen’s murder is a bit silly but also original and mysterious. How did Freddy do that?  Where IS Glen’s body?  How was it possible for Freddy to make all that blood shoot to the ceiling? There were many unanswered questions.

3. Dream Warriors – Freddy has become more witty with a comedic edge in the third installment of this franchise. In this film, we meet a bunch of misfit kids all staying at the same mental facility with different problems. The one thing they have is Freddy, who has invaded their dreams and invaded their lives. Jennifer, an aspiring actress and heavy smoker, enjoys watching TV late at night and burns herself with her lit cigarettes to stay awake and safe. Unfortunately, this not only doesn’t keep her awake but contributes to her death. She falls asleep watching TV and when she does Freddy bashes her head through the TV she was watching while delivering the best line of the film. “Welcome to Prime Time Bitch!”

4. Freddy has no shortage of creative killing in store for the Dream Warriors. My second pick from this film is Philip’s death. Poor Philip innocently sleeping in his bed while one of his puppets turns into Freddy. Freddy comes down from the wall and proceeds to turn Philip into a living puppet by dragging him to his death by his arteries which have been cut out of his arms, hands, and feet. To the other kids and hospital staff  it looks as though he is  sleepwalking then jumped to his death.

5. Dream Master – The fourth movie in the franchise brings in some new characters and kills off the survivors from part four. The remaining kids from Dream Warriors (Kristen, Kincaid, and Joey) have all been released from Westin Hills and have resumed their lives. My personal favorite kill of the film is when Joey is murdered in his water bed. Joey is dreaming when he sees a nude girl swimming face up inside his bed. There is no girl — only Freddy who pops out of the bed, drags Joey into the water and slashes him to death! Asking Joey as he dies “How’s that for a wet dream?”

Before I go I have one honorable mention. I did enjoy Greta the model’s death from part five. Greta is attending a stuffy dinner party with her parents and their friends when she falls asleep. Freddy shows up in a chef hat serving dinner but only to her. He promptly starts force feeding her until no more food will fit in her mouth and she chokes to death. Pretty gruesome. I especially liked the part where Alice finds her stuffed in the fridge and Freddy pulls her back in and slams the door shut. There is a post it note on the door that says “Die Bitch”

So those are a few of my favorite Freddy kills. Do you have any you’d like to add? Let us know what you think in the comments!

Episode 140: Wishmaster 2 – Evil Never Dies

Wishmaster_2_(1999)The Wishmaster has returned.  It’s our job to follow him to the ends of the Earth and report on what we see.  We didn’t see a whole lot.  Join Ron and Little Miss Horror Nerd as they take on the second movie of the franchise — much like the first in more ways than one.   In today’s discussion we talk plotholes (it takes about five minutes into the movie), we talk about the performance of the cast, the infamy of the director and the ridiculousness of some of the subject matter.  What constitutes a wish?  Really, please tell us because from this movie, we can’t figure it out.

Episode 139: Wishmaster

1271405-wishmaster_1_poster_01Your wish is our command and here we are starting the Wishmaster franchise.   Join Ron and Little Miss Horror Nerd as they open the franchise discussing the Djinn as an attempt at a new horror icon in 1997 at the expense of all your favorite horror icons from the 1980s.  Is Wishmaster a forgotten classic or a poorly executed attempt at making a franchise?  This isn’t your daddy’s genie.  This one has some stank on it!
