MOVIES THAT DON’T SUCK!

Hey Zombies this week my gift to you are some recommendations for some new horror films that DON’T suck!

images (1)

1. Blood Punch 2014 – What if you had to live the worst day of your life over and over? This is what happens when a crazy ex cop, his girlfriend and a meth cook head up to a cabin in the woods to cook up enough meth to make them all rich. Something goes horribly wrong. Shocker, right?!

One of them is murdered but won’t stay dead because these three people are stuck in one day that keeps repeating itself. If you are in for something a little different you definitely will want to check this out. It’s part horror, part comedy, with some Twilight Zone thrown in. Available to stream on Hulu.

2. Stung 2015 – A friend of mine would call this a beastly freak movie and he would be correct. Julia owns a small catering company. She and her employee, Paul, are hired to cater a garden party in the country for old women. Not long after arriving, Paul notices there are over sized wasps flying around the property. Eventually they morph into ginormous flying killers and start taking out the guests. This film is totally over the top but definitely fun. If you like cheesy monster movies and Lance Henriksen it’s worth a watch. Stung is currently streaming on Netflix.

3. Deathgasm 2015 – This New Zealand horror comedy is a true gem. It may be the best horror film released in 2015. Brodie ends up an orphan when his mother is committed. He is taken in by his uncle and aunt, who are religious zealots. Unfortunately for Brodie, their son David spends his days bullying him. In an attempt to combat his misery, he forms a heavy metal band with three friends. The guys get their hands on some cursed sheet music and end up summoning a demon when they play it. The demon turns  their neighbors, family, friends and townspeople into zombies with only murder on their minds. I absolutely adore this film. Not only did it make me laugh so hard at times that my stomach hurt but it had heart. There are also some amazing kills with gross out gore and there are BOOBS! It is available to stream on Amazon for $5.99.

4. Last Shift 2014 – This is the perfect example of a great no frills movie. The plot follows a young female cop on her first night on the force.  Jessica’s first night on the job consists of sitting in a police station that will be closed. The station has been moved to a new building a few blocks away. Sounds simple right? It is anything but. The station has a history of supernatural activity which is why the location is being moved. Little by little, Jessica realizes her first night on the job may be her last. This movie was shot in one location and includes little gore and death. Jessica is the main character — the rest are peripheral. The whole movie hinges on this actor’s performance and she did a bang up job. This is a slow burn that builds an overpowering sense of dread as a direct result of an amazing plot and strong performance. Last Shift is available to stream on Netflix.

5. Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse 2015 – Ben, Augie, and Carter are sophomores and have been Boy Scouts for the last seven years. They arrange a camping trip with their Scout Leader. They arrive only to learn Scout Leader Rogers is a no show. Unbeknownst to them Rogers has been attacked by a zombie deer. Later that night, Ben and Carter sneak off to go a secret party only to learn of the zombie apocalypse that is in progress. The kids eventually band together with a hot girl to fight the zombies. Scouts Guide is hilarious, gory, silly and ridiculous. There is a zombie cat lady played by Cloris Leachman, zombie kitties, zombie strippers, and even zombie dicks and boobs! It had a Goonies/Monster Squad feel to it. A kids versus monsters movie for the millenium with some extra ridiculous thrown in. It’s totally worth 90 minutes and $5 rental fee. Scouts Guide is available to stream on Amazon.

Perhaps you have some time off for the holidays and no plans. These five films would be an excellent way to spend your time.

Happy Holidays!
