Amongst Friends?

among-friendsAmong Friends is the directorial debut of Danielle Harris of Halloween fame. The film was released on VOD and DVD August 27, 2013. It stars Alyssa Lobit as Bernadette. The plot revolves around an 80s themed murder mystery party thrown by Bernadette for six of her friends. The party is unlike any party I have ever been to. With friends like these, who needs enemies. The film started off slow but once the action was underway I was sucked in.

I love me some Danielle Harris so maybe I am not impartial but for a first time director I thought it was a worthy effort. The movie was a Saw/Heathers/Would You Rather hybrid with Kane Hodder in a bit part. That was great but I think he could have been used better.  Among Friends does not take itself seriously, so it can be a little ridiculous but it is definitely fun. Danielle is billed as an actress as well as the director but if you blink you will miss her. The run time is 73 minutes which is perfect for me since I have ADD. I rented this movie for $4.99 from Comcast VOD.

badI also watched the critter flick Bad Milo released August 29, 2013. Bad Milo stars Ken Marino (Children’s Hospital) and Gillian Jacobs (Community). Bad Milo is a story about Duncan, a nice guy just trying to get by in life. Duncan has a lot of pent up anxiety which has unfortunately manifested itself as an ASS DEMON (yep — that’s not a typo). When that demon gets out all hell breaks loose! I’m not usually a fan of critter flicks (with the exceptions of Gremlins) but I thought this one brought something new to the toilet (Ed note: This bad pun was all LMHN — I had nothing to with it!).

I decided to check it out after reading some positive reviews by a few other horror bloggers. I wasn’t disappointed.  Bad Milo is billed as a horror-comedy although you’d be hard pressed to find much that was frightening. Milo was actually kind of cute when he wasn’t eating someone (ED Note: LMHN love of poop demons does not reflect the views of this website as a whole). He was a puppe,t not  CG which I imagine was a throw back to the 80s critter movies. This fun little flick had gore, humor and even a few warm, fuzzy moments.  I liked Bad Milo and was able to sit through it without checking my phone or tablet. If you enjoyed Slither or Night of the Creeps you will enjoy Bad Milo. Bad Milo is available on VOD or to stream on Amazon. com for $9.99.

HELL BABY WAS HELL TO WATCH!

hell

Hell Baby, a horror-comedy starring Rob Corddry (The Daily Show) and Leslie Bibb (Iron Man), was released to VOD on July 25, 2013. It will be released in theaters September 6.  Hell Baby is about an expectant couple who are moving into a new house where they soon discover there is something funny (or not in the case of this movie) going on. The plot itself was a sort of cross between Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist in the form of a parody. I wanted to like this movie. It actually had a pretty good number of positive reviews on Amazon so I was hopeful. I am starting to have some serious doubts about those folks who write Amazon reviews.  It had gore, jokes and a naked old lady — what could go wrong?! Only everything.

This movie was an absolute mess. The jokes were not funny and for  the first hour nothing happened. The pace was far too slow for a movie like this. Note to the writers: slow burn only works on actual horror movies. We finally got some action in the last half hour, but it was too little, too late. The VOD charge for this movie was $9.99 and boy, would I have flown into a serious rage if I had paid that! I paid zero which is what this movie is worth. I saw it for free with foreign language subtitles but that was a price I WAS willing to pay. So check it out if you don’t mind wasting 90 minutes of your life.

I also decided to check out the Netflix original series Hemlock Grove this week. I watched just the 1st episode of the first season.  I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. It is show about a small town full of secrets and a murder. I love Lily Taylor and I think the show has a great creepy sort of feeling to it. I will refrain from rating it since that would be difficult to do after only one episode but I will be watching episode two.

Episode 57: Slumber Party Massacre 3

spm3You know things are bad in the world when you can’t even meet a nice boy on the beach and have sex with him the same day without him killing you and all your friends!  Join Ron, Morty and Guest Host Stu as they travel through the events of a third slumber party terrorized by a guy with a giant drill — this is a horror movie, not a porno. Join the discussion as they talk about stupid decisions made by the victims, the implausibility of the killer’s weapon, the rape-van of a millionaire, death by dildo and of course — any and all breasts involved.

WOULD YOU RATHER?  YES, I WOULD.

Would You Rather? starring Brittany Snow and a horror short called The Beast from Dream Seekers Productions are my choices this week.

rather

First up is Would You Rather  released on DVD July 9, 2013. I have been thinking about renting this movie for several months and am glad I finally did. The plot revolves around Iris, a young lady who has lost her parents and is left with a sickly brother to care for. Iris has quite the dilemma because she has been left with her deceased parent’s debts and her younger brother’s medical bills and no source of income. Then she receives an offer she cannot refuse that will solve all her financial woes but at a price, of course. Nothing in life is free. Would You Rather? did remind me to some degree of Saw but with its own twists and turns. I found it had originality, moderate gore, and it made me think. What would happen to your moral compass if you were in a dire financial situation? It was absolutely worth the $3.99 I paid to stream it on Amazon.

I also watched a short called The Beast  this week from Dream Seekers Productions. This 12 minute movie was about a father who has a werewolf for a son and is not sure what to do about it. I was pleasantly surprised at the production value of this short on what must have been an almost non existent budget. I have seen full length low budget horror movies that did not look or sound as good. I also enjoyed the retro vibe that seemed to be a throw back to the Wolfman movies of the 1940s. Check out “The Beast” and other horror shorts by Dream Seekers Productions on YouTube.
