Books, Dolls and Danielle Harris — Oh My!

You must have been good boys and girls because this week it is five horror novels and not one — but two scary movies!

1. Salem’s Lot – Stephen King (1975)

salems_lot_reprint

These days vampires are sexy, romantic, kind-hearted teens who only feed on animals. How boring! Vampires are blood thirsty monsters. Stephen King certainly knew that. If you like to be totally creeped out and do not require a happy ending. You must read this book. Although this book was written almost 40 years ago, it stands the test of time. What could be better than evil vampires taking over small towns!?

2. Stiff : The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers – Mary Roach (2003)

Stiff-cover

I read this book right after my grandfather died five years ago. I wanted to know exactly what would happen to his body now that he was no longer using it. Mary Roach’s book explained it all with humor and well researched facts (science if you will). You will learn about rigor mortis, decomposition, embalming, cremation, cadaver research, and everything in between. Stiff is amazing, gross, funny and informative. My favorite non fiction book of all time.

3.BedBugs – Ben H. Winters (2011)

10749460

What would you do if you moved into your dream home and it was infested with bugs that only you could see? I never would have believed I could be scared, creeped out or even unsettled by a book about bugs but I was. This tale of bugs and paranoia will leave you feeling itchy and creeped out! Keep the benadryl close by while reading this one.

4. The Stranger Beside Me – Ann Rule (1980)

2409573

This chilling story of the brutal murders of over 30 coeds in the 70s by a handsome, charismatic young man is 100% true. Ann Rule is a former cop and had a personal friendship with Ted Bundy, the subject of this book. Imagine the chills that went down the spine of the author when she realized her friend and co-worker (at the rape crisis hotline) Ted was guilty of raping and murdering all these girls. If the realization that you never really know anyone isn’t terrifying I don’t know what is.

5. The Last Victim – Jason Moss (1999)

488644

Another true life horror story! Jason Moss was an 18-year-old college student in 1994. Jason had dreams of joining the FBI. Thinking he could learn something about them by corresponding with them, he started writing to incarcerated serial killers. He formed a relationship with John Wayne Gacy, even visited him before his execution. I’m not sure this was the best idea. Jason definitely learned something. Sometimes you should let the monster keep his mask on. Sadly, Jason took his own life in 2006.

sc43dgFirst up in movies, Hallow’s Eve starring the lovely Danielle Harris. This movie was released on October 1st 2013 to DVD and VOD. I rented this movie because Danielle was the star and because I couldn’t believe the single negative review on Amazon could be valid. I said to myself it can’t be that bad. It was that bad! The movie revolves around Eve, a teenager who was the victim of a disfiguring accident as a child. Ten years later, someone starts murdering teenagers who are connected as the children of the teens responsible for Eve’s accident.  Hallow’s Eve is the kind of disaster that boggles the mind. It is predictable but made no sense.  Danielle was the only recognizable actor as well as the only actor with any talent. She was both misused and underused. She was cast as some sort of boring maternal figure. She barely had any lines. If you took her character out of this movie there would zero impact on the plot. She must have gotten bad advice from her agent because she is beyond needing to take these kinds of roles. All I can come up with is she owed someone favor. This movie was just awful. This movie was so boring that I don’t even think getting drunk and/or high would make it entertaining. Available to stream on Amazon for $3.99.

LITTLE MISS HORROR NERD’S RATING: 1/5

images(3)Curse of Chucky starring Fiona Dourif as Nica and her amazing father Brad as the voice of Chucky was released October 8, 2013 to VOD/DVD. Nica is paralyzed and lives with her mother who is has issues with depression. In the first 10 minutes of the movie, her mom kills herself. Nica’s sister, brother-in-law and niece show up for funeral services. This is when the madness and mayhem get underway. I cannot understand why this movie was not released to the theaters. Curse of Chucky was perhaps the best and strongest sequel since part II. The acting, writing, and production were all quality. The story was strong with so much spooky atmosphere it was almost cliche. The film had something for everyone in my opinion. There was gore, profanity, humor, even a little girl-on-girl action. I was also very pleased that we went back from campy to creepy. There were even a few twists that were super fun and some nods to Halloween and Friday the 13th. I LOVED this movie! I even watched it straight through without touching my phone or tablet once! I rented the movie for $4.99 from Comcast VOD and it was worth every cent.

LITTLE MISS HORROR NERD’S RATING: 5/5

A HORRIBLE HOMECOMING!  STAY HOME AND READ!

With Halloween coming up, I’ve decided to fill your bag up with treats a little early.  This week, I’ll review a movie and give you a list of my five favorite horror novels of all time. In my opinion there is nothing better than sinking your teeth (pardon the pun) [Ed Note: No]  into a great scary novel. As an Only Child, books were a good friend to me in my youth. I though I’d share a few of my favorites.

dark

1. Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King was published in 2010 winning The Bram Stoker Award for best collection. I picked up this collection of 4 novellas  this summer after it had been collecting dust on my shelf for 2 years. I’m so glad I did. I was hooked from the first page. If you are looking to be truly horrified, this is the book for you. There are no vampires, dead pets, or evil murderous clowns. The monsters in these stories are 100% human. [Ed Note: Except for the one that has the Devil in it] These stories are are about the banality of evil. I read “Big Driver” at night alone in my apartment during an electrical outage. Don’t do this unless you are a crazy bitch like me!

it
2. It – This Stephen King novel was published in 1986. I’m not even sure I needed to put this book on the list because everyone who is a die hard horror fan loves this novel. But since it is one of my favorites, I can’t leave it off. If you haven’t read it — you must! The only problem I had with It was the ending. However, with over 1000 pages of wonderful, I can accept the book’s flaws. It was truly creepy. What if as a child what scared you most could materialize and repeatedly try to murder you [Ed Note: This is the same as living with Morty] ?

horns
3. Horns by Joe Hill was published in 2010. I guess good horror writing runs in the family because Joe is Stephen King’s son. The first time I read the synopsis for this book, I thought the plot sounded ludicrous. I kept seeing the book pop up all over with good reviews so finally decided to take a chance on it. Horns is definitely a bizarre story but it swallows you up until the very end. I thoroughly enjoyed the originality of this horror story and look forward to reading his new book NOS4A2.

summer
4. Summer of Night by Dan Simmons was published in 1991. I love this book. This was the first book I read by this author and won’t be my last. Summer of Night is a coming of age story about a group of five young boys during the summer of 1960. There is something rotten in their town of Elm Haven, Illinois so they set out to get it before it gets them. I actually read this before I read IT and found the stories to be quite similar. The writing is unique and helps  story sucks you in. This book inspired me to read IT which I’d picked up in the past and put down due to the length. If you loved IT, read this it will be like hooking up with an old friend.

house
5. The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons was published in 1978. I am still blown away that this book was written by a writer who never wrote another horror novel before or after this book.  The main character is an evil house. Everyone who lives there has terrible things happen to them but can never quite get to the bottom of what is going on. I know it sounds very basic, but I hate spoiling the story. This book made my skin crawl. If I had to categorize this it would be Gothic horror.
Happy reading!
homecomingFor the movie this week I watched Bloody Homecoming. Bloody Homecoming was released September 24, 2013 on DVD and available to stream on Amazon. Bloody Homecoming stars Lexi Giovagnoli as Loren. Loren and her friends are getting ready for their senior homecoming. They are all very excited and being the silly teens they are, they don’t notice someone has started picking them off before the dance has even started. Someone wants revenge as a result of the tragic accident that occurred at the homecoming dance three years prior. I was looking forward to this movie based on the trailer and plot synopsis. I thought it may be a good take on an 80’s teen Slasher. The plot was pretty generic — kind of a cross between My Bloody Valentine and Prom Night. That would have been fine if the blood didn’t look like grape juice (come on guys you can’t even afford Karo syrup and red dye?) and the acting wasn’t scarier than the movie itself. My favorite character was the weird janitor who was an OBVIOUS red herring. And finally the Scooby Doo ending just made me extremely angry!  If you agree or disagree with me, let me know in the comments section!

Crystal Lake Memories

memories

I’m sure anyone who is a die hard horror fan was patiently (or impatiently) awaiting the release of the new Friday the 13th documentary. Crystal Lake Memories was released, appropriately, on Friday, September 13th 2013 as a DVD/BluRay combo pack. The documentary itself was 7 hours long and because I pre-ordered I got a bonus disc with another 4 hours of material.

lakeI love horror documentaries and was very excited to receive this. The documentary is narrated by Corey Feldman, who introduced us to Tommy Jarvis in Friday the 13th 4: The Final Chapter. The documentary is split into 12 chapters, one for each movie in the franchise. The 2-disc set covers Friday the 13th all the way through the 2009 remake, including Freddy vs. Jason. Even though it had little in common with the movies outside of it’s name, Friday the 13th:The Series was included as well. Each chapter consists of interviews with cast, crew and director from that installment. The format is similar to the previous Friday the 13th documentary, His Name Is Jason.   I think they may have either reused interview footage of some of the actors or the actors just offered up the same anecdotes. I didn’t necessarily mind this because there was a great deal more information offered up in this documentary with many more actors included. There were a few mainstream actors missing that I would like to have seen *cough* Crispin Glover Kevin Bacon *cough* but I guess I will live! There were many interesting tidbits regarding production, cast, and crew. As well as where they are now updates including who has passed away (sadly there were a few untimely deaths). I also love seeing how everyone has aged. Crystal Lake Memories will be an essential and excellent  addition to any horror fan’s DVD collection and is well worth the $24.95 price tag.

LITTLE MISS HORROR NERD’S RATING: 4/5

For lists of deceased actors/crew from the Friday the 13th check out these partial lists here and here.

I also watched a short film by Rob Dimension, called Baggage .  Baggage is a 15 minute, black and white film about a normal guy who is not so normal. You might be able to catch this cool little film at a festival but  it will be playing alongside Trick r Treat on October 19 at The Frank Banko AleHouse Cinema in Bethlehem, Pa.

For details on this event and more information on Rob’s other films go here

Baggage can also be purchased here for $8 and includes a bonus short
