MORE LIFE ON MARS THAN IN THIS MOVIE

mars

The Last Days on Mars was directed by Ruairi Robinson and stars Liev Schreiber of Scream fame.

The story revolves around five astronauts who make a discovery during a mission to Mars. This discovery leads to a deadly virus being unleashed aboard their spacecraft and they must fight for their lives (Ed Note: As oppose to….not?) . I love my slasher movies, but it was time for something a little different.

This film was a sort of zombie/sci-fi hybrid. I was not impressed. I am not a fan of Sci-fi/Horror, though if done well, I can enjoy these films (i.e. Alien). The word “zombie” was never used to describe the crew members who had been exposed to the virus but this is what they were (Ed Note: The word “zombie” is never used in Night of the Living Dead, either). There was virtually no blood and the “zombie” makeup was terrible. The “zombies” just looked like people with a bunch of chimney soot all over their face (Ed Note: Morty?).

At times it was difficult to make out what was going on as a result of the lighting (The Descent had this issue as well).  (Ed Note: In their defense, one takes place in a cave and the other on Mars) The movie didn’t take off until the last 40 minutes and the conclusion was obvious and inevitable. Overall, the movie was depressing with no humor or mystery.

The Last Days of Mars is currently available on VOD and Amazon for $9.99. The film will be released in theaters December 6. My recommendation is to wait until it until it is available on Netflix unless you like flushing ten dollar bills down your toilet!

KILLER HOLIDAY KILLED ME WITH CONFUSING PLOT

image

Killer Holiday was directed by Marty Thomas and distributed by Lionsgate Films. The story revolves around a group of teenagers going on a road trip for Spring Break. In the opening scene, someone murders the parents of one of the students. The kids are right outside the house while this occurs but do not notice (of course). Soon, they are on the road to I am honestly not certain where but eventually end up at an abandoned amusement park (Ed Note:  What could go wrong there?  Maybe they’ll run into the Scooby Gang). This is the point in the movie where the story finally gets going but I’m not sure how much traction it has. It took until the last 35 to 40 minutes of the film before anyone else got murdered and I question how many of these kids actually died since several of them didn’t even have fatal injuries. Apparently, we are supposed to believe that being stabbed in the eye causes death after several minutes (Ed Note:  Let’s try it!). How about if your arm is chopped off and you just continue berating the person with the voice of a shrew like you were doing prior to them axing your arm (Ed Note: I’m guess this character was female)? The killer (who we see in the opening scene) is not a mystery only his motives are.

The killer’s motives are such a mystery I never really figured them out. I kept waiting for that point in a horror movie where it all makes sense but it never did. The kills were somewhat creative but there wasn’t much blood or gore. No naked boobs at all (Ed Note: Boooo!!!) although, oddly, a sex scene was thrown in at the end of the film (sex at the END of a horror movie? ) There was nothing scary about this film except how confusing it was. Worst of all, despite the cover art, there were no evil clowns! Unless you enjoy mind bogglingly confusing plots with more holes than Swiss Cheese, do not bother. Killer Holiday was released to DVD and VOD November 5, 2013.

Episode 67: She-Wolf of London

shewolfIt’s London in the late 1890s, so you know it’s foggy as Hell and the numerous officers from Scotland Yard will be bumbling about trying to solve the latest werewolf mystery.  This one is a little trickier as the finer of the two sexes has taken to the streets to rip out jugulars.  To lead you through this journey, Ron, Morty and Guest Host Stu sit down to try to solve the mystery of the She-Wolf of London.  Along the way, they play a game of “Who Would You Rather?,” discuss the movies inclusion in the Wolf Man Legacy collection, tall bumbling cops, trick endings, various Disney movies and what constitutes well off and poor in jolly ol’ England back in the 19th century.

Horror News:  Lack of Child’s Play remake, Hellraiser remake and plans for Ghostbusters 3.

CONJURING UP SCARES

conjuring

You’ve been bad, so this week it is just one movie, kids. The Conjuring was directed by James Wan and released to DVD and VOD October 18, 2013. The movie stars Patrick Wilson (Insidious) as Ed Warren and Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel) as Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators of Amityville fame. The story revolves around Carolyn and Roger Perron played by Ron Livingston and Lily Taylor and their 5 daughters.

The Perron Family moved into a dilapidated Rhode Island farm house in 1971, where they immediately started experiencing paranormal disturbances. Carolyn Perron becomes very concerned for the safety of her children and tracks down The Warrens to beg them to investigate her home.

I was pleasantly surprised by this film. Usually, whenever a film is so heavily hyped I end up very disappointed. The Conjuring had a very solid story with some excellent jump scares. It was sort of a Poltergeist / Amityville Horror hybrid but with a better story and movie than Amityville (Ed Note: I hope you are speaking of the remake).  When evaluating a film that tells a ghost story,  I find the scariest and creepiest movies are the ones where you do not see the monster or if you do it is fleeting. I have never been particularly fearful of witches but this movie changed my mind to some degree.

Creepy dolls, however, scare the life out of me (Ed Note: That would make you dead). Clown doll from Poltergeist anyone? The Conjuring had Annabelle a possessed doll who was absolutely terrifying. Sadly, she was a very small component of the story. If she had had a starring role, I think I would have had a great deal of difficulty sleeping the night I watched the film.

If you are looking for a body count this is not the film for you but if you liked Insidious, Poltergeist, Amityville Horror or even Sinister you will not be disappointed. There were one or two hokey scenes but overall a strong entry into the horror genre. The score was perfect and created excellent spooky atmosphere. I rented it for $4.99 from Comcast VOD.

Sleep No More – Greg Iles, published in 2001

sleep

Sleep No More is the story of a man who was part of an obsessive love affair years prior to marrying his wife. He thought he had permanently escaped this woman when she disappeared and he thought killed. Just when he is happy, a beautiful stranger invades his life and knows things only his long dead girlfriend would know about their relationship.  Is his girlfriend back from the dead? If not who is this sinister stranger?  I loved this book. Obsessive love, possible reincarnation, murder! It doesn’t get any better. This author is not a horror author and never wrote another book like it but check it out —  it is a real treat.
