GRE-GORY, BIG BAD VAMPIRE BAT

gregory-TOY

He’s The Bat You’ll Love To Hate!

Gre-Gory, the Big Bad Vampire Bat by Mattel, is a toy that I LOVED so much right out of the gates (of Hell of course)! Monsters were where it was at in my youth! Being a HUGE monster fan as a child meant I was loaded up to my gills in monster toys. I saw this in the store back in the day and managed to bag and capture one.  This toy came out in 1978 and though  it was towards the end of the really swell monster years, this still ranks near the top of my list for its size and sheer bloody nature!

AdIt’s amazing features and size puts it well ahead of the pack of usual bat suspects. Gre-Gory has a giant 15 inch wingspan! The fangs of this creature can also hold on like it was biting you. The feet were made so that you could hang him upside down, to frighten anybody that dare pass by.

The feature that has, and had me frothing at the mouth though is the clear chest cavity that allows you to see the blood flowing through its body, when you push a button on the back! Pushing that button allows you to become part of the bloody dripping, oozing and sucking vampire filled FUN!

The Ideal Monster Lab

4

In 1964, the Ideal Toy Company came out with a killer monster toy: The Monster Lab.  The toy was like a Mad Scientist’s best nightmare! You just can’t beat the hair raising graphics on the box and the plastic toy that mimics Frankenstein’s Lab! If you stared at it real close while playing it was just as good as being in Franky’s Lab! Take a close look at the vast lab equipment, controls, beakers, and machinery. This was visually a monster lovers dream. So Awesome!

The players had to try to keep the monster away from their end of the Monster Lab with the buttons that make him walk back and forth. If the monster reached either end of the lab, he raised his arms, emitted a growl and the mask over his face dropped off and you LOST. A  chilling and electrifying experience!

As a kid I drank this up like blood on a tombstone. It was another favorite for sure. I loved just looking at it. This one had its own gruesome spot on my shelf of all important things monster related!

Demonic Turkeys, Man-boobs and Gravy Flavored Condoms!

thanks

Peck on someone your own size (Ed note – Ya stay up all night thinking of that one?)! In honor of Thanksgiving, I watched Thankskilling a horror/comedy about a killer turkey. Thankskilling was released in 2009 with a cast of unknown actors. Jordan Downey directed and has just two other movies to his credit (including Thankskilling 3).

The story revolves around five college kids on Thanksgiving break who run into a demonic killer turkey on the way home from school (Ed Note – I hate when that happens).  Car trouble and an impromptu camping trip cause the kids to meet up with this killer turkey. Although they get back on the road safely, the turkey follows them home. Mr. Crazy Foul Mouth — no pun intended — (Ed Note – I’ll be the judge of that) turkey sets about killing the kids.

thanks2The first thing you see when the movie opens is a pair of saggy,  middle aged boobs in a Pilgrim outfit (Ed Note – Ah, just like the Thanksgivings of my youth). That is the last of the lady boobs but if you like man boobs there are plenty of those! This movie was like the most bizarre acid trip you have ever been on. Turkey porn, turkey Leatherface, Alien Turkey, dream sequences, and extra small gravy flavored condoms (Ed Note – That was the greatest list ever assembled) plus bad acting and idiotic lines equal plenty of giggles. There were even a few scenes where the actors seemed to be genuinely  laughing at the ridiculousness of the movie they were in.

With the exceptions of a heart being pecked out and the ingestion of a translucent floating turkey, there wasn’t much blood or gore in the film.  The whole film is a ridiculous mess, but surprisingly entertaining.

LITTLE MISS HORROR NERD’S RATING: 3/5

You can purchase Thankskilling here.

dotf_teaserThis week, I also read The Dark of the Forest, by Freaktown Comics. I am not generally a fan of comics and rarely read them but decided to check this out because it is a horror comic. The story is sort of a cross between Friday the 13th and a Bigfoot story. The plot revolves around a group of friends who go on a camping trip. While there, one young man tells the story of a Bigfoot type creature who attacked a group of young people many years prior and killed them all. Of course, his friends do not believe him. I’m sure you can imagine where the story goes next. I enjoyed this comic. It was to me a horror movie in comic form. There was not really much in the way of humor in it but it was a fun and quick read. I would be interested in reading future horror story comics by Freaktown Comics.

Rape, Torture and Murder — Oh My!

spit3

There are a handful of scary movies I have avoided most of my life despite horror being my favorite genre. These include; the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Last House on the Left and I Spit on Your Grave. I have since watched Texas Chainsaw. I guess I believed all the hype about these movies being so brutal as to be unwatchable. Unless you enjoy inflicting psychological damage on yourself. Even though I was afraid to watch these movies, I was still curious.

Today, I scratched another of these movies (and it’s remake) off the list. . Welcome to a Double Feature of I Spit on Your Grave (1978) and the 2010 remak! Nothing like being disgusted on a lazy Sunday afternoon . Meir Zarchi, an Israeli filmmaker, produced and wrote both films but only directed the original.spit

In both the original and remake, the story revolves around Jennifer Hills, played by Camille Keaton in 1978 and Sarah Butler in 2010, a writer from New York City who rents a cabin in the woods to write her first novel in solitude. Unfortunately, the local boys have other ideas and with no warning descend on Jennifer and attack her. In both movies, there are four young guys who are involved in the rape — one of whom is mentally disabled. The other men basically taunt this pathetic guy until he joins in the action. After Jennifer has been repeatedly raped, beaten and sodomized, she is left for dead. We all know where this is going whether we have seen these movies or not.

I’m not entirely sure what I was expecting (particularly from the original 1978 film). I suppose I thought it would be so brutal I would be unable to watch it. The original and remake were both brutal, disturbing, and disgusting for different reasons.  The original film had a very different tone than modern films of the same variety. In fact, the movie starts out with an almost cheerful tone so that if you did not know what you were watching you would have no idea what was coming. The victim screamed plenty during the attack, but it was not excessive. Once the revenge portion of the movie got going she had become eerily calm and actually used her body to lure the rapists to their death. In some ways, I was more disturbed by the way in which she gained their trust so that she could murder them than I was by the attack against her. Society is conditioned to accept, or at least not be shocked by, violent behavior from men but when a woman is violent people are totally thrown off.

spit2The remake followed the original story line pretty closely but the tone was totally different. From the moment the movie begins the tone is foreboding. In this case, whether you knew what you were watching or not you had a sense things would be going terribly wrong. There were a few changes made to the story, one of which was just not believable. I felt the rape in the original was far more graphic and raw the revenge portion of the remake was totally over the top but that could be chalked up as just a product of the current times. Jennifer is far more visably angry during the revenge scenes in the remake. In a way, these ladies seem to have two different emotional reactions to being attacked.

Although written by a man, the original is truly a feminist film.  I have never been attacked in this manner but can imagine a woman who had having the thoughts and feelings Jennifer had and even fantasizing about taking revenge on her rapist. The crazy scenes of her torturing her attackers in the remake just take away from the power of the story. Sometimes less is more. Overall, I liked both movies but prefer the original.

Now for some trivia:

– The original film had no musical score. Meir Zarchi said he spent 3 weeks testing music for the film and was unable to find anything that fit.

– Jennifer Hills played by Camille Keaton was Meir’s wife-to-be at the time of filming (they have since divorced).

– His inspiration for the film came following an incident where he helped a woman to the police who had been raped.

– The movie’s original title was Day of the Woman but when it was picked up for distribution by the Jerry Gross Organization the title was changed to spur on ticket sales.

For the remake:

– One of the attackers is played by Rodney Eastman who played Joey in Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and 4. Boy, did he have a gruesome death!

I also want to make clear that while the rape scenes in both of these films were tough to watch I found myself infinitely more horrified by the rape scenes in The Accused and Boys Don’t Cry perhaps because I knew these were true stories and neither of these victims got much in the way of justice.

LITTLE MISS HORROR NERD’S RATING: 4/5 (1978) and 3/5 (2010)
