Creature Features – The Game of Horror was released in the United States in 1975 by Research Games, Inc.

1I played this game a lot with my friends. At that time, we never missed an episode of Creature Double Feature on TV each Saturday. We were all psyched to find many of the movie monsters in the game as well.

This awesome monster game was like Monopoly but with all of the amazing major movie monsters of the day. It replaces streets and property with horror-themed movies and actors.

What monster lover wouldn’t LOVE the board game Creature Features? And what fright film fan wouldn’t be frothing at the mouth to play it?

The MONSTERS on the game board were some of our favorites like The Abominable Dr. Phibes, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Dracula, Frankenstein, Godzilla, King Kong, The Mummy, The Phantom of the Opera, Willard, and many more SaturdayTV friends. Of course, it was even more fun when all my friends and I would have Creature Feature on the TV at the same time.

This was the partner game to Creature Double Feature on TV that any Monster lover couldn’t live without!

A WINTER STORM OF HORROR

frozenThere are not very many New Year’s themed horror movies. (Ed Note: New Year’s Evil, Terror Train, Bloody New Year, Steel Trap…) In fact, I can think of only one and it is awful. However, keeping with a winter theme I have chosen a scary movie and a scary book both set in the snow.

First up, is a movie called Frozen (Ed Note:  Did you secretly go see the new Disney movie?) which was released in 2010. This film was directed by Adam Green of Hatchet I, II and III fame. This is not your typical horror film. There are no murderous madmen, ghosts, or vampires. Frozen is the simple story of three young adults who go skiing and get stuck on the ski lift at the end of the day. It’s Sunday and supposedly the slopes will not reopen til Friday.  What follows is a terrifying journey into panic, desperation, and survival. (Ed Note: As is every time I try to pick up a girl at a bar)

Although it seems a little unbelievable that ski slopes would only be open on weekends, the concept is very scary because it is possible. I personally would not be at risk as I have never been skiing and unless I suddenly got the urge to break every bone in my body, I will never go skiing. (Ed Note: Or have sex over the age of 60) If you are looking for a gory film with tons of dead bodies, this is not for you. This is a good a suspense/psychological horror film that I quite enjoyed.

TRIVIA:

– Emma Bell’s character, Parker O’Neil, has a cameo in Hatchet II.

– The film was shot with the actors actually suspended 50 ft in the air over a mountain in Utah.

– Kane Hodder has a cameo as the driver of a snowcat.

– Adam Green and Director of Photography Will Barratt shot the scenes of the chairlifts moving with the kids on them, themselves as the hired film crew was too nervous to dangle at those heights.

Overall I really liked this little film.

LITTLE MISS HORROR NERD’S RATING: 3 1/2 out of 5

I also would like to recommend a scary novel called Eternity by Tamara Thorne, published in 2001.

eternityThis novel is the story of a Los Angeles cop Zach Tully whose family is murdered by the serial killer he has been trying to apprehend. At some point after the murders he receives an invitation to be the Sheriff of Eternity, a California Mountain town. Once he arrives he finds out he is the replacement for the previous sheriff who was found chopped up (Ed Note: I would hope that there would be some law that would force this county into disclosing this information in the want as). Tully also discovers he was brought to Eternity to solve a series of serial murders that have been occurring off and on for 100 years.

Before reading Eternity I had not previously read anything else by this author. I was quite impressed with this story.  It had everything one would want in a horror novel; gore, many murders, humor, mystery, strange characters, a small town and a twist. Eternity will be a quick but fun read with an original twist on an old story for anyone willing to give it a chance. (Ed Note: Go eat a stale cookie)

THE OUTER LIMITS

6

The Outer Limits ROCKS! It was a television series that aired on ABC from 1963 to 1965. The series is often compared to The Twilight Zone, and for good reason. Rod Serling created The Outer Limits as well.Box

I LOVE The Outer Limits! The stories were dramatic and convincing enough to make me think it was real when I was a kid!

THE OUTER LIMITS GAME

Game3

The game consists of a deck of cards and a game board But its OH SO COOL LOOKING! (I love old board games because the graphics are so great!) It’s a FUN card matching game!

Sideshow Toys – the OUTER LIMITS 12-inch figures

Sideshow toys produced a great series of 12″ action figures based on The Outer Limits.

Included were: Ebonite Interrogator, Gwyllm Griffiths, Helosian and andro, Ikar and Ikar’s Soldier, Keeper of the Purple Twilight Ikar and The Zanti Misfits

I LOVE these figures and wish I bought them all! They look close to the aliens and monsters in this amazing show! The Outer Limits figures were from Sideshow’s wilder days unfortunately….

Killing Santa and Killer Santa

evil  evil4

In the spirit of the holiday, I decided to review a couple Christmas horror movies. I chose Christmas Evil (November 1980) and Don’t Open Til Christmas (December 1984) in the United Kingdom.

evil2Don’t Open Til Christmas is set in London. At the start of this movie a man in a Santa suit and a woman are murdered when they meet in an alley way to have sex. The main character, Kate Brioski, sees her father murdered in front of her at a party while wearing a Santa suit. It is here that we realize this killer has something against Santa! There are two detectives investigating these three murders but they don’t seem to be getting anywhere as the Santa body count piles up. Kate begins to get frustrated and starts doing some investigating of her own.

I don’t want to spoil it so I will stop here. I really enjoyed this film. It was fun with some creative kills! One Santa had his dick cut off while using the restroom and bled to death. What a horrible way to go! Are the men reading this cringing? Another Santa has his face shoved into the grill he was roasting chestnuts on. There was even an electrocution of a non Santa. There is also a woman who almost gets it when she ends up in an alley wearing nothing but a Santa cloak but the killer lets her go after running a straight razor over her naked body. Yes, there are boobs in this movie!

By the end of the film the killer’s motive is revealed and the movie ends on a violent yet comical note. Overall, this movie was a lot of fun and held my interest.

LITTLE MISS HORROR NERD’S RATING: 3/5

Trivia:

– Edward Purdom who played Inspector Ian Harris agreed to star in this film only if he could also direct. He then quit the directing portion and two more directors were hired; One of whom lasted two days and was then fired.

– Dick Randall (whose films were known for sex, blood, and humor) produced this film as well as whole host of other horror films including Pieces and Slaughter High.

evil5Christmas Evil was directed by Lewis Jackson and stars Brandon Maggart as a Harry Stadling, a deranged man who wants to become Santa Claus. Harry endured a disturbing event as a child involving Santa. This event had such a negative impact that Harry is warped and decides to become Santa to show that Santa can be good. Harry works for a toy factory and leads a sort of solitary existence except his relationship with his brother —  which is not a good one.

Harry takes to sleeping in his Santa suit and spying on the neighborhood kids to see if they have been good or bad. He eventually loses it and on Christmas Eve steals toys from work to deliver to disadvantaged kids at the hospital. Afterwords, he goes on a killing spree. Harry murders people he considers bad, such as a co-worker who called out that Harry had to cover for but Harry then spied in the local bar on the way home.

This movie was extremely bizarre and another case where I felt like I was on acid while watching a movie. That said, I did actually like this film it was just not what I had expected. This is not a straight up slasher film and if that is what you are looking for do not bother. It is more of a dark comedy with some intelligence. I didn’t find in the least bit scary and there was minimal gore and NO boobs! This is basically the story of one man’s descent into madness.

LITTLE MISS HORROR NERD’S RATING: 3/5

TRIVIA:

– Synapse Films released a special edition of Christmas Evil in 2006. It includes audio commentary from the Director and from cult filmmaker John Waters who has been quoted saying it is the “greatest Christmas movie ever made”.

Christmas Evil was originally released as You Better Watch Out.

– Kathleen Turner was turned down for the role of Harry’s sister-in-law.
