What Does the Fox Say?

You’re Next was released to DVD January 14, 2013, was directed by Adam Wingard and written by Simon Barrett.

The story revolves around a family that goes to their vacation house for the weekend to celebrate their parent’s anniversary. Shortly after arriving, they discover they are under attack from a crossbow wielding lunatic who is shooting at them through the windows of the house. I won’t say more about the plot because I do not want to spoil it. I will say it was not a great reveal as I already had an idea of who was behind the attack and why.

images(2)However, that did not stop me from enjoying the movie. It was a super fun little film. From the opening scene to the credits it was all-murder all-the-time (Ed Note: We know how you love the murder). Tons of blood; a few creative deaths — even an ax to the face which my editor would appreciate (Ed Note: Nothing like an ax to the face to get the ol’ blood flowing in the morning).

Do not get me wrong, this film had problems. The masks were silly instead of scary; the victims were morons as were the killers; and there was some corny dialogue. Fortunately, none of this took me out of the film. My favorite character (the only one who was not stupid) was the “it girl,” (Ed Note: (c) Friday the 13th) Erin, played by Sharni Vinson. Erin was one BAD ASS bitch! I absolutely loved her. She is who I would want to be in the event images(3)I were dropped into a slasher movie or if I were under attack in reality.

Overall, I enjoyed this film regardless of any problems I may have had with it. In my opinion, it was a hyperactive, crazy ride of a film that did not take itself too seriously and at 95 minutes was not too long. I also loved that there was only one song on the soundtrack Dwight Twilley’s “Looking For the Magic”. This song was played repeatedly during the film which gave it a sort of a bizarre touch. Give it a chance — you will not be sorry and if you are, feel free to tell me off in the comments section!

TRIVIA:

– Simon Barrett, the screenwriter, was also the Tiger Mask.

– Ti West and Joe Swanberg both mumblegore (a horror genre) directors have roles in the film.

Séance: The Voice From The Great Beyond by Milton Bradley (1972)

2

I loved this game sooooo much! It was super fun just getting to set up this 3 dimensional game and looking at the haunted victorian mansion that lay before you!

5

The best part was definitely the Seance table and record player inside that conveyed ghostly messages from beyond….How cool is that? It was so spooky with the lights out that it would feel kind of real and get your goose bumps growing once you received “The Voice From The Great Beyond”

1The players are the nieces and nephews of old Uncle Everett who had passed on and left a most peculiar will. For old Uncle Everett was a spiritualist… that is, he believed his spirit would come back and guide the distribution of his wealth. In his will, he requested his nieces and nephews to come back to a seance in his old Victorian mansion. He left each one $20,000 and a chance to make more or lose some. The object of the Séance Game is to outwit rich Uncle Everett and win the most money.

6After assembling the cardboard Séance room, props, and chairs, you couldn’t help (as I said earlier) but play with the best prop in the game! The Séance table was irresistible! Within the plastic table, the record would spin that contained the voice of our dear departed Uncle Everett. By activating a switch on the side of the table, Uncle Everett conveyed his messages from The Great Beyond. The messages were randomly played each time the switch was activated. (Of course everybody was more concerned with getting to hit the switch on the record player than actually playing the game but it was a HAUNTING good time just the same!)

All players would bid against each other for the privilege of receiving a “message” from the record. The highest bidder obeyed Uncle Everett’s wishes. The voice may give you Aunt Zelda’s portrait, or perhaps nothing at all.

When the game was over and the room was plunged into darkness, it is said that the image of Uncle Everett may be seen. At the end of the game you would shut the lights off for that sudden feeling of FEAR and PANIC and Uncle Everett’s Face was GLOWING madly as it was secretly hidden under Aunt Zeldas portrait that hung on the wall. Somebody would secretly take  Aunt Zelda’s portrait of the wall during the lights out confusion and reveal Uncle Everett who’s come back from the GREAT BEYOND!

Insidious = Inadequate

insid

Insidious 2 was released to DVD and VOD December 24, 2013. Patrick Wilson and Rose Burns reprise their roles as Josh and Renai Lambert. James Wan once again directs.

The story picks up right from the ending of the original Insidious. Hopefully, you are not reading this if you have not seen the original because there will be spoilers. Josh went into a realm called “The Further” to rescue his young son, Dalton, who was stuck there as a result of an evil spirit who was trying to take his body (Ed Note: If I had a quarter for every time an evil spirit tried to take my body). When Josh returns to the real world it seems a demon the spirit of an evil old woman has followed him and proceeds to murder the medium Elise who had been helping his family.

insid2Insidious 2 begins with his wife being questioned by the cops regarding the murder and the possibility of her husband being responsible. The family has also moved into Renai’s mothers house while the police process the scene of the medium’s death. Unfortunately, it seems these malevolent spirits have followed the family. Meanwhile, Josh begins to act more and more bizarrely.

Insidious 2 was by no means the worst sequel to a horror movie I have ever seen (Ed Note: Exorcist 3? Final Destination 5? Sleepaway Camp 4?), but it was disappointing. This movie attempted to explain the story behind why these evil spirits were tormenting the Lambert family and who they are. While I did like the story of who the evil spirits were in life, I just did not care for the way it was executed.  It would have been better to have given these explanations in the first chapter and have made a new chapter about a different family.

In my opinion, there was not enough of a story for these characters to continue with them into a second film. I did not find this movie even remotely frightening. There was very little humor, no one was murdered, little to no gore and only one scene I found to be creepy. In the end, I felt the plot was muddled and the movie did not hold my attention.  As my editor might say, it was a story that did not need to be told (Ed Note: Ah, you are learning young padawan).

A third film in the series was announced in September 2013 and is scheduled to be released in April 2015. The end of Chapter 2 seems to suggest the third film will be about a new family. One can only hope.

seriesEver bought something really old that when you bring it into your house, it makes everything uncomfortable?  Perhaps you can trace this object back to Curious Goods, the antique shop literally cursed by Satan.  Ron has battled through the snow and power outages to warn you of this evil place. Along with guest host, Little Miss Horror Nerd, they will discuss three episodes of the late 80s horror anthology TV show. Topics include whether or not LMHN is a hoarder, how you had to watch things first run “back in the day,” Ron’s hesitation to accept new technology, Friday the 13th vs. Freddy’s Nightmares, old school sitcom formats, plotholes, lack of depth in the characters, character archetypes, creepy dolls vs. creepy kids and the utter horror that is photography.
