Little Miss Horror Nerd’s Little Horror Blog 31

Ok kids! I had some good feedback on last week’s blog so since you like lists; here are two more. This week we’ll look at my top 5 horror sequels and top 5 most violent horror movies.

LITTLE MISS HORROR NERD’S TOP FIVE HORROR SEQUELS

 (MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!)

5. Friday the 13th The Final Chapter

fridaythe13thpart4_3Up until recently Parts 6 & 7 were my favorite sequels in this franchise. After viewing all of the films from a different perspective for the podcast, I switched my favorite to The Final Chapter. This film has what many of the later sequels do not —  continuity. Aside from this, it has a strong storyline, characters you care about, decent kills and an 11-year-old hero! What more can you ask for? It’s not perfect but it is pretty damn good for the fourth movie in a franchise. And it has boobs — which makes the boys (Ed Note: And some girls) happy!

4. Scream 4

Scream is probably my favorite horror franchise next to Halloween. I like all three Scream sequels. There are no weak movies in this series (Ed Note: Did you see Scream 3?). In this film, we get the lovely Emma Roberts playing Sidney’s cousin and the main killer. She does murderous bitch very well (Ed Note: Debatable). I also enjoyed the twisty false beginning to the film. Because this franchise took an eleven year break this installment felt almost like a fresh update on the original Scream. It had a great cast, plenty of murder and made me laugh a lot. I may be an idiot but I never guessed who the killer was either.

3. A Nightmare On Elm Street : Dream Warriors

dreamwarriorsMy favorite sequel in this franchise used to be Freddy’s Revenge. Upon further evaluation, I switched to this film. For some reason as a kid, I didn’t realize how much the second film veered away from the formula of this franchise. Freddy isn’t supposed to inhabit the bodies of teen boys just as Jason isn’t suppose to possess someone who eats his heart. Dream Warriors is strong entry into this series. We get Nancy back as well as a new batch of Elm Street Kids. Although Nancy is murdered, we have a new worthy heroine who falls into her place. With any horror movie, we need creative kills. We get that in spades in this film. My personal favorite was Jennifer getting her head bashed through a TV that had arms and Freddy’s head.

2. Curse of Chuck

I’m sure some of you will think I have lost my marbles (Ed Note: Yep) but of the five sequels in the franchise, this is my favorite. I did enjoy Bride of Chucky and laughed quite a bit things got way off track with Seed of Chucky, so I was looking forward to this film. I was not disappointed.  Curse of Chucky moves away from campy and back to creepy. I am a HUGE Brad Dourif fan so I loved that his daughter played the lead girl. Aside from that, there were some cool kills and I loved the creepy house setting.

1. Halloween H2O

h20-2

I love this movie and I think this is the strongest sequel in the franchise. Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her role as Laurie Strode was basically the guarantee that the film would be successful.  Aside from Jamie Lee Curtis the film had a strong cast, an excellent setting in the school, and a super creepy opening with the nurse from the original Halloween being stalked and murdered by Michael.

LITTLE MISS HORROR NERD’S TOP FIVE VIOLENT HORROR MOVIES

5. Hostel

It took me a long time to work up the nerve to see this craziness. I actually saw the sequel first. If I ever had plans to take a trip to a far away land and stay in a youth hostel, I cancelled them after seeing this horror show. I think the most cringeworthy scene is when the killer Dutch businessman offers to let Josh go after drilling holes in him. Unfortunately for Josh, he isn’t really free to go and the Dutch guy cuts his Achilles Tendons as he tries to get away. Then there is the Japanese girl whose eye is blow torched and although she gets away, she ends up jumping in front of a train. Trips to Slovakia? Thanks but no thanks!

tcm4. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Here is another brutal and terrifying film I avoided watching until my thirties. I was convinced I would not be able to make through the film due to being frightened to death. I eventually did and I was just beside myself. I had never seen a film like this. It was raw and riveting. Just the idea that one could be riding around with friends, make the wrong stop and end up being butchered like animals was my worst nightmare. People aren’t murdered during the day! Are they? Even though this movie is basically bloodless the images of the teens being tortured and murdered inside the house never leave you.

3. Halloween 2 (2009)

I know many of you out there hated this film. You cannot deny the fact that it is uber violent. This film is just dark and disturbing — like a REALLY scary nightmare or bad acid trip. The death of the nurse just makes you feel like you have witnessed an actual murder. The death of Annie was so depressing it made me want to go watch a Brady Bunch Marathon (Ed Note:  Uh….it’s the Brady Bunch that you watch to talk you off the ledge? Really?)  right after the movie.

2. I Spit On Your Grave (remake)

This film was just as brutal as the original,  albeit in a different way. In the original, the focus was on the crimes against the woman. In the remake, the focus is on the revenge she takes against her attackers.  Shotgun fired up the ass anyone? Castration with a blunt knife? How about having all your teeth pulled out with pliers? Did I tell you I hate the dentist?! As far as brutality and violence goes in movies, this movie is totally over the top. I’d skip eating before watching.

1. I Spit On Your Grave

spit4

I just watched this movie for the first time this year although it is almost as old as I am (Ed Note: They made movies back then?). I had avoided it for years as I feared I would be psychologiclly scarred by it. I wasn’t but I did feel like I needed a shower after the movie was over. This woman was repeatedly raped, beaten, and sodomized. Honestly, it felt like you were watching an actual rape at times.  It didn’t have that glossy look many horror films have now. The film had a Texas Chainsaw Massacre feel to it. It works. Neither of these movies had much of a budget and both depicted murder and rape occurring in broad daylight. If that is not scary, I don’t know what is.

So that is it! Those are my picks. Feel free to add to my lists or debate them in the comments.

Unleash Hell 12

THEM BONES MEGO BOARD GAME (1976)

1

This game was way similar to Operation in that you had to avoid touching the metal contact with your tweezers as you try to extract bones. The amazing thing about this game is that it was a horror/scarier version of Operation. You would grab all the bones out of a killer glowing skeleton head with light up red bulbous eyes!  In Them Bones, however, 5successfully extracting a bone allows you to move further ahead on a game board. Bumping the contact would cause a buzzer to buzz and the scary eyes to glow red at you like a warning from Hell!

This game was suspenseful creepy and FUN! The set of glow-in-the-dark bones associated with this game included T-bones, Ham Bones, Trombones, and Funny Bones so it had a little humor mixed in with the horror, which was always kind of FUN.

For an extra eerie challenge, players could take advantage of the fact that the skull and bones could glow in the dark and by turning out the lights during the extraction attempts it made the game much more fun and scary not to mention a harder game to play. The skeletal hand on the spinner was oh so cool and also would glow-in-the-dark. You just can’t ignore how cool a skeleton spinner was! Lords of Light and Demon Dogs — It was the BEST!

4  2  3

Of course, once again I LOVED the hell out of this game! Glow In The Dark RULES! I loved the Operation game, so it was an instant LOVE and with the skull head and bones added, it made it that much more scary and FUN!

When I was done playing with this game the skull would always stay out in my room for that extra enjoyable thrill! LOVE LOVE LOVED it!

Little Miss Horror Nerd’s Little Horror Blog 30

ghost

I’ve decided to do something different this week! Rather than review a movie,  I have chosen my Top 5 “It Girls” and my Top 5 “Best Twist Endings” to a horror movie.

First up — The “It” Girls.

My number 5 choice: Nancy, A Nightmare On Elm Street

indexShe was the only one of the kids to use her intelligence to thwart Freddy. She avoided being murdered, sent Freddy away (short term at least) , and made it through to the end of the third movie. However, that is also why she is number five. Sadly, she was eventually murdered.

My number 4 choice: Alice of the original Friday the 13th

Alice is a fighter and was the sole survivor of this movie. If not for Alice, Mrs. Voorhees would likely have continued to murder future counselors and then there may have been two killers! Instead, Mrs Voorhees was single-handedly brought down by Alice and put in her grave forever. Alice is at the bottom of the list because she was quickly dispatched in her own well lit apartment in the beginning of the sequel.

My number 3 choice:  Laurie Strode of Halloween 1, 2, H20, and Resurrection

images(3) (1)Laurie Strode is undoubtedly a fighter, intelligent and seemingly a virgin. She never really thwarted her evil brother Michael Myers but she did manage to avoid being murdered by him well into adulthood. She even changed her name and moved across the country to achieve this. Unlike the first two ladies, she didn’t personally do much physical damage to Michael except in H20 where we were led to believe she’d murdered him. Alas, he outsmarted her and she was eventually murdered in the 4th movie she appeared in.

My number 2 choice: Erin from You’re Next

Erin is my favorite “It” Girl of all time. This is one crazy bitch you do NOT want to fuck with! She is brilliant and physically superior to every single other character in the movie. Erin ends up in a horrific situation thanks to her greedy boyfriend and turns the tables on the killer. She immediately goes into survival mode and although she is not supernatural she would probably have to do what she did to survive in the real world. In the end, she literally is the LAST one standing. The only reason she isn’t my number one is because there haven’t been any sequels yet so who knows how many films Ninja Erin will survive.

My number 1 choice: Sidney from the Scream franchise

images(4)

We first met this lovely girl in 1996 as a high school virgin whose mother was murdered. Although most of the teens around her (including her best friend) were murdered, Sidney made it to the end of the movie. This in spite of the fact that she was attacked by Ghostface at least 3 separate times. Sidney has been surrounded by people for 4 movies and the equivalent of 20 years that want to murder her. Often these killers are friends or family members. Sidney seems to be an expert at evading murderers even while everyone around her dies. How this is possible, I am not certain because her skills seem to lean toward crying, running and screaming. She is not nearly as physically adept as the other ladies on this list. I wonder if she did not have Dewey and Gale if she would have made it through 4 movies. If there is a Scream 5 and she is murdered (which I hope and pray for)  I’ll have to bump her.

In closing, to be fair Nancy and Laurie beat Sidney hands down in the intelligence department but they were both fighting killers who cannot be killed.

My Top Five Twist Endings

(MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!!!)

My number 5 twist ending: Psycho

index(2)I know some of you reading this are questioning my sanity but I think my order will make sense when you get to number one. Psycho is the tale of one young man’s undying love for his mother. Poor Norman murdered his mother and her boyfriend years prior to the events of the movie and then takes on the identity of his mother to cope with what he did.  I recall the first time I watched this film straight through I had no idea Norman was the killer. When it is just a skeleton in the rocking chair that is revealed to be Mrs. Bates, I was quite shocked but it wasn’t the sucker punch a few others have been. I saw this film as an adult and by that point had seen things far more shocking in horror movies. As a result, I am sure the impact of the big reveal was diminished.

My number 4 twist ending: Identity

index(4)Ten strangers who share the same birthday find themselves stranded at a remote hotel during a horrific rainstorm. One by one, they are picked off and the bodies go missing. Eventually we learn that just one of the strangers exists and that person is a killer suffering from disassociative disorder. Honestly, this movie is bonkers! I literally spent the entire movie turning every little thing the characters did over in my mind desperately trying to figure out whodunit and why. When the explanation came, I was floored! In my opinion one of the most original mysteries I have ever seen.

My number 3 twist ending: Friday the 13th (1980)

We all know the story of Jason and his mother. Jason drowned at Camp Crystal Lake because the counselors were having sex instead of watching him. Now some 30 years later the counselors at this same camp are being murdered! I imagine plenty will disagree, but I think this is a very smart slasher because it was also a mystery. Unlike Halloween, A Nightmare On Elm Street, even Texas Chainsaw Massacre the killer is not seen until the very end. Since this is the first movie in the series and we do not get much back story the ending works almost like an Agatha Christie mystery. I watched this film as a teenager and I was totally blown away.

My number 2 twist ending:  Sleepaway Camp

Little 12-year-old Angela Baker goes to summer camp with her cousin. Someone starts murdering the campers and staff while she is there. What’s a girl to do?! Angela didn’t need to do anything because at the end of the film we learn SHE is the killer and SHE is a HE! Say What?! I watched this movie as an adult and when the big reveal came I think I almost had a heart attack. I was that shocked. I couldn’t wrap my mind around what I had seen. It is my opinion that this film was ahead of its time. While it was certaintly not intended to be some sort of tolerance message, gender identity and transsexual characters were not the norm 30 years ago. These days we have Boys Don’t Cry, The Dallas Buyers Club, and Transamerica to name a few. Even The Silence of the Lambs wasn’t until 7 years later.

My number 1 twist ending: The Sixth Sense

images(6)

I saw this in the theater opening weekend. A shrink with marital problems counsels a boy who is plagued with visions of the dead. I never saw this ending coming. There were clues which the movie runs through at the end but I never had even an inkling what was actually happening. When it is revealed that the doctor is dead and had died after an attack by one of his patients even he is surprised. The ending knocked the wind out of me. I was shocked and sad! That movie has stuck with me ever since.

There you have it folks and it is a long one this week! Feel free to dispute my choices in the comments.
