The Curse of The Omen

Do you believe you can conjour evil just by making a film about it?

I think most of us believe that true evil exists. How we believe it manifests itself is another story. Some of you will believe what you are about to read is the work of the Devil and some of you will chalk it all up to bad luck and coincidence. Whatever you believe the events surrounding the filming and production of this movie are chilling.

index(2)The 1976 horror film The Omen starring Lee Remick and Gregory Peck was the brainchild of a business man named Bob Munger. The idea came to him while crossing the street in L.A. He said he thought to himself what if the Devil were already here on Earth in the body of a child. Like many other horror films dealing with demonic presences (The Exorcist, Poltergeist), there is a purported curse upon this film.

The first event was the suicide of Gregory Peck’s young son three months before filming began. Filming was to take place in London in the Fall of 1975. Both the writer David Seltzer’s flight to London and the producer and director’s flight were struck by lightning. These were two separate flights from LAX to London. Once the cast and crew arrived in London, a plane both the producer and director were set to fly on in order to shoot some aerial footage crashed and killed everyone on board.

The film was also plagued by several crazed animal attacks, including a keeper at the zoo they shot the safari scenes at being killed by a tiger shortly after shooting ended there. It was at this point Lee Remick, who was initially scheduled to do her own stunt in the scene where she falls from the balcony, refused to do it. She had become so spooked according to the director that she was convinced something bad would happen if she did her own stunt.

In two more bizarre incidents, a hotel the cast and crew were staying at was blown up by the IRA right after they left and a restaurant the cast had reservations at was blown up minutes before they arrived. Somewhere along the way the producer started to wear a crucifix. They all made it back alive to the States and the film was released on June 6, 1976. It was made for 2 million dollars and made $100 million worldwide in the first six months. Apparently Bible sales went way up!

images(6)Finally, John Richardson the set designer who created the decapitation scene was in terrible car accident in August 1976. He and his assistant were involved in a head on collision on Friday the 13th near a road sign with 666 on it. His assistant was cut in half and killed. Richardson survived with injuries.

If you examine each of these events individually they can all be explained away by nature, politics, and just plain bad luck. I don’t know of anyone who would blame a tiger attack or lightning strike of a plane on the Devil (pretty sure he has bigger fish to fry). However, when you add them all together and consider they were happening to the same people surrounding the production of the same film the hair on the back of your neck may just start to stand up. Honestly, the car accident and suicide really give me the creeps. What do you think?  Coincidence, bad luck or something more sinister?  Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.

Kenner Alien Action Figure

5

“IN SPACE, NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU SCREAM”

I have to say….one of the greatest monster designs of all time was the original Alien, designed by H.R. Giger. I just LOVE it! And love H.R. Giger! I will never forget sitting in the theater and seeing this film for the first time, it was so scary and exhilarating! Both the creature and the movie are consistently in my top ten lists!

7jpgSimply one of the coolest vintage toys ever made, Kenners 1977 18 inch Alien Figure was So Great! It boasted an awesome and realistic sculpt and super scary protruding innner jaws! This thing looks like it could rip your face off right out of the box! No wonder parents in the 1970’s freaked out over this toy and had it pulled from the shelves! So sad!

This thing was the creepiest! so lifelike!! So AMAZING! Check out this video!!!

There were a few toys linked to the Alien franchise in the 70s; a dart gun set with targets; a very cool hand viewer that had a crank that when turned you could watch about 3 minutes of scenes from the movie — it even showed the scary Alien; a target set that had a gun that shot ping-pong balls at the Alien, and Alien Puzzles. There were four boxed puzzles released: the Space Jockey, the Nostromo, the Discovery, and a “Giant” 3 foot tall puzzle.

We’ve gotten a bum load of Alien toys over the years, but when Kenner produced an 18″ Alien figure based on the creature from the very R rated film that parents loved to freak out about, they pushed so many boundaries and created a popular and killer collectible for life!

HEAVEN IS FOR EVERYONE –EXCEPT YOU!

Bloody Bloody Bible Camp starring Reggie Bannister of Phantasm fame was released on May 5, 2012.

images(2) (2)

The story begins at a Bible Camp for teenagers in 1977. One by one, the kids are slaughtered by someone in a nun’s habit wearing a mask. The film then jumps ahead seven years, to a new group of kids attending the same Bible Camp. Of course, after a story is established the kids start getting murdered again. Sound familiar? Hint: Friday the 13th.

This film was bananas. It was just a carnival of bad taste and blasphemy — I loved it!  I was raised Catholic and attended Catholic School (Ed Note: Did you have to wear those outfits?) for many years and I was not offended in the slightest. However, if you are easily offended by religious humor, I’d skip this one.

index (1)I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I definitely thought it would not live up to the trailer or the reviews but it far exceeded my expectations. There was something for everyone and it followed the formula for slashers and went above and beyond. In the first 15 minutes, nine campers were murdered. This included full body frontal nudity of a girl being chased by the killer (Ed Note: yes) ; a male camper murdered while taking a dump (Ed Note: Okay); and a guy butt banging a girl for at least 30 seconds before noticing she was dead and headless (Ed Note: Yes!!)!!! We get several more naked boob shots later in the movie along with some very bizarre kills including a girl being sodomized by a crucifix and then being murdered by having it shoved in her mouth. You have to see it to believe it.

If the movie had a different tone to it, I may have been scarred by it. But that is just another great thing about this movie! It is a self-proclaimed horror comedy that is actually funny. I actually laughed many times. And to top it all off, Ron Jeremy (Ed Note: A hero of mine) played Jesus Christ. It really doesn’t get any better than that.

For what it was and what it was trying to be, this movie succeeded. The acting was bad and it was totally over the top but for 90 minutes of gross outs and giggles, who cares! Bloody Bloody Bible Camp was totally worth my time.

LITTLE MISS HORROR NERD’S RATING: 4 out of 5
