WE ARE WHAT WE EAT

download (1)

We Are What We Are directed by Jim Mickle (Stakeland) starring Bill Sage was released in 2013 and is a remake of a 2010 Mexican horror film.

The movie tells the story of a family of five who live in a remote area of a small town and practice cannibalism. In the first ten minutes of the film, we witness a woman die. The woman turns out to be a wife and mother to three children. Upon learning of his wife’s passing, her husband Frank basically falls apart emotionally and physically. He commands his oldest daughter to take over her mother’s duties which include preparing human flesh for their meals. As the story progresses you learn more about this family and their motives for consuming human flesh.

download (2)This film was another recommendation from a friend and I was quite impressed. I imagine based on subject matter and synopsis alone most people will assume that they will be watching something graphic. We Are What We Are is not overly gory or action packed. It is not silly or funny. There is nothing light about it even the cinematography while beautiful, presents a dark and dreary back drop. What it is, is a slow burn that makes you think and feel. It sickens and disgusts but not in a gratuitous way.

The story is believable. We have all read stories about a town or towns that have had many unsolved disappearances over several decades. Is it so far fetched to think that those missing people could not only be murdered but also the victims of cannibals? Not to me. Cannibals didn’t just exist in far away lands years and years ago. I can give multiple examples of modern day cannibals who killed to possess and consume their victim. Jeffery Dahmer was one of them. He was a little less sanitary about it than this family and his motives may not have been exactly the same, but it was still cannibalism. Not only is it a crime to kill and eat another human being, it is also socially unacceptable and a sure way to contract all sorts of diseases no one wants.

images (1)This film disgusted and angered me. The idea that there are people in this world who think they are entitled to do whatever they please to other people just because they want to fufill their own desires or perceived needs fills me with rage.

There are several reasons why this film works as serious, thought provoking horror but number one is the acting. Bill Sage absolutely blew me away as Frank, the patriarch of this family of cannibals. He sickened and enraged me. I wanted to reach through my TV screen and throttle him.

We Are What We Are is a true gem and while it is firmly part of the horror genre it is intelligent horror. Rent it. Buy it. Whatever you do watch it. For you sickos out there the nastiest and most horrific death occurs during sex. (ED Note: Says the girl who recently wrote a column about the best horror deaths to take place during sex)

We Are What We Are is currently available to stream on Netflix.

MONSTER VITAMINS!

6

These little monsters have been a lost memory for most 70s kids, but for me they are burned into some strange part of my brain that can’t resist thinking and talking about these old friends!
4Not a toy but super fun monster pop culture! These friends had names and great shapes and colors and also came in a super cool haunted house box and they even had their own monster mobile!
There was: Gorgonzola (green creature), Babbly Bat (yellow bat), Fedorable (orange creature with hat), Screaming Mimi (pink creature), Sneaky & Squeaky (two headed red creature) and the blob (purple creature)
Of course I ended up playing with them on the table before eating them (who could resist?). For years I’ve been wanting to add a box to my collection, but since they went out of production forever ago they are rarer than vampires that don’t suck blood!  Oh, if your lucky enough to smell them again…that sharp vitamin smell of childhood…..simply monster nirvana!

The Perfect House…of Horrors

ThePerfectHouse

The Perfect House is a horror anthology released in 2012 starring Felissa Rose and Jonathan Tiersten of Sleepaway Camp fame. This film was strongly recommended by a friend and did not disappoint.

The-Perfect-House-1-FTWThe stories revolve around a house that a young couple is intending on buying. The couple goes to look at the home and possibly make an offer. Led by the sexiest realtor I have ever seen (Ed Note: You don’t watch enough porn) complete with boobs hanging out of her business suit, the kids tour the home. At some point during the tour the kids are shown the basement. It is there where they start asking questions when they spy suspicious stains on the floor. Although many terrible things have occurred in this home, much of the violence has occurred in the basement. This house has a history of violence that involves multiple owners — whomever owns this house ends up committing terrible crimes in it. Is it the house or the people?  I’m not sure even now but I had fun trying to figure it out.

Although this is low budget horror film there is plenty to praise. I enjoyed the stories, acting, and pace. Jonathan was quite convincing as a psycho serial killer with a sense of humor. Felissa definitely put the SCREAM in “Scream Queen”. The Perfect House held my attention and kept me quite entertained for 90 minutes. I was a bit disappointed with a few of the effects but overall there were decent kills and for the budget I was impressed. I have seen plenty of horror films with bigger budgets full of lazy kills that made no attempt when clearly they could have afforded to.

doesy

To sum it up if you are a gore hound who likes a lot of murder in their horror movies and a little humor and drama thrown in,  this is a fun film.

You can find The Perfect House at http://www.felissarose.com/ to stream for $2.99 along with a ton of other fun stuff.

Episode 97: Saw

sawWhat would you do if you woke up and were chained to a pipe in the grungiest bathroom of all time with a dead man several feet away from you and the dude from The Princess Bride on the other side of the room?  Of course, you would ask him what it was like to drink with Andre the Giant, but after that, you may consider your situation!  That’s just what Ron, co-host Little Miss Horror Nerd and guest host Jay of the Dead do in this edition of the podcast.  Before Jay of the Dead could saw his own leg off to escape they discussed Jigsaw’s motives, Saw as the father of torture porn, why does this bathroom exist, whether or not Shawnee Smith is a Scream Queen and clues to the twist ending.

Horror News: Crite figures, Show Full Moon Your Trophy Head and a prequel to The Shining
