HORROR IN BRAZIL
I am back and I bring with me a Brazilian horror movie! Beyond the Grave was released in the United States in September 2010.
The plot revolves around a police officer hunting a possessed serial killer in a post-apocalyptic landscape. Along the way, he meets and picks up others that are trying to survive in this new world. However, his ultimate goal is to find and eliminate the serial killer.
I’ll start off by saying this film was extremely slow moving for the first hour. There were zombies but I wasn’t sure of their purpose because they never aggressively bit anyone. The living people seemed to be hiding from them but I don’t know why. Only one person was bitten and it seemed to be an accident. In fact, I don’t think the zombies even knew their purpose. Anytime they were killed it was because they stood there and allowed it. I won’t go any further except to say that overall this film reminded me somewhat of Fallen or God forbid — Jason Goes to Hell. Everytime the serial killer was killed, the person who was responsible became the killer.
I didn’t like this movie. For me it had some bizarre imagery but was a confusing mess otherwise. Most of the time, I had no idea what was going on. It was only at the end that some things made sense. There are subtitles but that wasn’t the problem for me. There was violence but much of it was off camera. There was also no humor or nudity. In some things I read it was compared to a spaghetti western. I don’t like those so perhaps that was the issue. I had no expectations going into this movie but ended up quite disappointed anyway because I am not even sure it is horror.
