MORE LIFE ON MARS THAN IN THIS MOVIE

mars

The Last Days on Mars was directed by Ruairi Robinson and stars Liev Schreiber of Scream fame.

The story revolves around five astronauts who make a discovery during a mission to Mars. This discovery leads to a deadly virus being unleashed aboard their spacecraft and they must fight for their lives (Ed Note: As oppose to….not?) . I love my slasher movies, but it was time for something a little different.

This film was a sort of zombie/sci-fi hybrid. I was not impressed. I am not a fan of Sci-fi/Horror, though if done well, I can enjoy these films (i.e. Alien). The word “zombie” was never used to describe the crew members who had been exposed to the virus but this is what they were (Ed Note: The word “zombie” is never used in Night of the Living Dead, either). There was virtually no blood and the “zombie” makeup was terrible. The “zombies” just looked like people with a bunch of chimney soot all over their face (Ed Note: Morty?).

At times it was difficult to make out what was going on as a result of the lighting (The Descent had this issue as well).  (Ed Note: In their defense, one takes place in a cave and the other on Mars) The movie didn’t take off until the last 40 minutes and the conclusion was obvious and inevitable. Overall, the movie was depressing with no humor or mystery.

The Last Days of Mars is currently available on VOD and Amazon for $9.99. The film will be released in theaters December 6. My recommendation is to wait until it until it is available on Netflix unless you like flushing ten dollar bills down your toilet!
