DON’T BREATHE
This week I had a chance to watch the just released on VOD, Don’t Breathe. Don’t Breathe was directed by Fede Alvarez and stars Jane Levy (Evil Dead 2013).
The plot follows three young friends living in Detroit who are all looking for a better life. These kids aren’t into getting jobs at the local fast food joint — they take the easy way and start robbing rich people. Since they are only taking stuff, it’s slow going on the cash front. Then one day they hear about and old man who lives alone and may be keeping a large sum of money in his home so the kids decide to rob him. Their first mistake? They break in while he is home. I will stop here as I don’t do spoilers.
If think you have seen every stupid decision a horror character can make, you have not seen this film. Either these kids seriously lack common sense or their greed outweighs their sense of self preservation. While I noticed a few plotholes, they did not keep me from enjoying Don’t Breathe. All four main characters were basically awful people. That said, I actually enjoy novels and movies where all or most of the characters are terrible people. Maybe because I have to work harder to like or identify with any of them? I do enjoy depressing story lines.
I really enjoyed this film. The director did a great job with keeping the the suspense and tension very high and constant. The action was non stop and while it was extremely violent, the gore wasn’t over top. Stephen Lang did an amazing job as the old man. I hated the old man so much and was so angry at him that I yelled at my TV! He might just be the most fucked up character I’ve ever come across in a horror movie. This was a fun and scary movie that evoked real emotion from me — albeit anger. I highly recommend it.
It’s available to rent on Amazon.
